Advantages and Disadvantages of Carbon-Zinc Batteries

Advantages:


Low cost: This is the most fundamental advantage of carbon-zinc batteries. Their manufacturing materials and processes are relatively simple, resulting in prices that are typically much lower than those of alkaline batteries.


Meeting Basic Needs: For low-power, intermittent-use devices, carbon batteries are more than sufficient.


Disadvantages:


Low capacity: For the same volume, the capacity of carbon-zinc batteries is typically only 1/4 to 1/6 that of alkaline batteries, meaning their runtime is significantly shorter.


Short lifespan: Not only do carbon batteries have a small capacity, but they also exhibit a high self-discharge rate. Even when unused, their charge can significantly decrease after just one year of storage. In contrast, alkaline batteries can be stored for 5-7 years.


Unstable performance: During high-current discharge (such as for digital cameras or electric toys), the voltage drops rapidly, causing the device to malfunction. It performs better under low-current, steady discharge conditions.


Leak-prone: This is the most criticized drawback of carbon-zinc batteries. When the battery is depleted or stored for an extended period, the internal zinc can corrodes and develops holes, leading to the leakage of chemical electrolyte. These liquids are corrosive and can severely damage the battery compartment and electronic devices, making repairs difficult.

Important Note: If you cherish a valuable electrical appliance (such as an expensive remote control or an heirloom wall clock), to avoid the risk of leakage, it is best to use alkaline batteries and replace them regularly.
