Dry batteries have brought convenience to our lives, but the accompanying environmental problems have become increasingly prominent. Especially disposable dry batteries, if not properly disposed of after being discarded, the heavy metals, electrolytes and other harmful substances inside them will seep into the soil and water sources, pollute the environment and endanger human health. Therefore, understanding the environmental hazards of dry batteries and mastering reasonable disposal methods have become an important part of practicing green life and protecting the ecological environment.

The environmental hazards of dry batteries mainly come from the harmful substances inside them. Traditional carbon-zinc dry batteries and alkaline dry batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead. These substances are highly toxic and difficult to degrade. Once they enter the soil, they will accumulate for a long time, destroy the soil structure and affect plant growth; if they seep into groundwater or surface water, they will pollute drinking water sources. After being ingested by the human body, they will damage the nervous system, hematopoietic system, kidneys and other organs, causing serious health problems. In addition, the electrolytes in dry batteries (such as potassium hydroxide and ammonium chloride) are corrosive and will also pollute the soil and water sources.

With the improvement of environmental awareness and the development of technology, the environmental performance of dry batteries is also constantly improving. At present, China has prohibited the production and sale of dry batteries with mercury content exceeding 0.0001%. Most alkaline dry batteries have achieved "mercury-free", which has greatly reduced their environmental hazards. But "mercury-free" does not mean "harmless". Mercury-free dry batteries still contain substances such as zinc and manganese. If a large number of them are discarded at will after being discarded, they will still have a certain impact on the environment.

For the environmental protection disposal of waste dry batteries, we should follow the principle of "classified recycling and centralized disposal". For individuals and families, waste dry batteries should be separated from domestic garbage and put into special waste battery recycling bins to avoid random discarding; for enterprises and units, a waste battery recycling mechanism should be established, and after centralized collection, they should be handed over to professional recycling and disposal institutions. Professional institutions will adopt scientific treatment methods, such as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, to extract useful substances (such as zinc, manganese, iron, etc.) from waste dry batteries, realize resource recycling and reuse, and at the same time carry out harmless treatment of harmful substances to avoid polluting the environment.

In addition, to practice the concept of green environmental protection, we should also reduce the use of dry batteries from the source. We can give priority to rechargeable batteries (such as lithium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries) instead of disposable dry batteries to reduce the generation of waste batteries; at the same time, develop the habit of saving electricity, turn off unused electronic devices in time, extend battery life, and reduce environmental pressure from the source.

The environmental protection road of dry batteries requires the joint efforts of individuals, enterprises and society. Only by mastering the correct disposal methods and practicing the concept of green use can dry batteries provide us with convenience without becoming a burden on the environment, and jointly guard our green home.
